These guidelines are too simple that none is going to tell you. But it’s really important to build a strong network, especially in an industry where networks DO MATTER like startup. Most of the time, you can learn it on the job overtime.
I took me a while to learn these simple tips. To save my team members’ time, I create this guideline as a part of our training program.
Terms
The wanted: the person you want to get connected to
The connector: the person connects you to the wanted.
- Thank you first
Always thank you your connector before saying hi to the wanted. In email, you can bcc connector.
(I bcc John in this email).
Thanks John for introduction.
Hello Kim, ….
2. Response time
The sooner the better right after the connectors do the intro email. 24h or less. You don’t want to put your connector in an awkward situation.
3. Asking for a call/ meeting
Be specific. The less choice they have, the faster they can make decision.
SHOULDN’T
I’d like to have a call with you this week. Please let me know when are you available?
SHOULD
I’d like to ask for 15 min Skype call at 3pm on 14 May 2017? Does that work for you? Otherwise, please suggest me your suitable time.
4. Make it easy
People are LAZY. Make it as easy as possible for them to take your desired action.
- Write a forward-able email/intro to the connector. So that they don’t have to think how to introduce you to the wanted.
- Wrap up key points from your attached proposal. None reads it.
I’d like to wrap up some highlights of the event below. Detailed proposal can be found in the attached file.
- Light attached file to be open in seconds. Never compress it into zip files. Check view permission if you send Google links.
5. Catch their attention fast
Quickly give them relevant reasons to take your desired action. Don’t just ask. Research your target to know what they need!
SHOULDN’T
Since you’re an expert in the industry, we’d love to have you as speaker at our event.
SHOULD
Since you’re an expert in the industry, we’d love to have you as speaker at our event. This is also a great chance for you to introduce your new startup to Blockchain community.
6. Follow-ups
Let your connector know when their intro works. It’s both nice to him and help you maintain the relationship.
Hey John, Kim just agreed to join our event as speaker! Thanks for connecting him with us. I will send you invitation to our event. Can’t wait to meet you there.
Note: when you’re the connector?
If you’re the connector, always check if the wanted is ok for introduction. Don’t force them in the intro email.
Hi Kim, I have a friend who is hosting an event about Blockchain. Her company is an early-stage investor and a very active community player in Vietnam. She is looking for international speakers who are interested in how blockchain startups work in Vietnam. I think you’re a great fit. May I introduce to you?.
John
